Eden Prairie Schools Chemical Health Services

Students in Eden Prairie Schools are provided with broad-based prevention and chemical health support services to address a wide range of issues. The goal of the program is to keep chemicals out of the school, prevent students from using, and serve students and families who are adversely affected by their own or someone else’s chemical use.

We are committed to a collaborative student, school, family, and community process that promotes health through prevention, intervention and support:

  • Mandated follow-up for all Eden Prairie students receiving chemical violations
  • Assessment of a student’s substance use and level of severity
  • Collaboration with school staff who may have additional information
  • Parent contact to discuss the situation and plan next steps (contracts, chemical evaluations, groups, treatment or other intervention)
  • AWARE, a four-hour chemical health education class
  • A corresponding AWARE parent session
  • Referral to, and collaboration with, community services and programs for substance abuse
  • Crisis family meetings regarding the student’s substance use
  • Prevention Education Group which provides student support, skill-building, processing of risky choices, and affirmation that adults within the school setting are caring and supportive
  • Concerned Persons Groups to provide support for students whose parents, caregivers, or other family members are chemically dependent

Teen drinking linked to watching R-rated movies

by Sharon Jayson, USA Today, 4/26/10

New Dartmouth Medical School research on 2,406 children shows that middle-schoolers who are forbidden to watch R-rated movies are less likely to start drinking than peers whose parents are more lenient about such films.

Researchers found that among those whose parents let them watch R-rated movies "all the time," almost a quarter had tried a drink without parents' knowledge. That compares with barely 3 percent who tried a drink among those who were "never allowed" to watch R-rated movies. See the full article here.
